What is the difference between MMS and SMS?

You'll have the ability to send your text message as either SMS or MMS in the Summary step of the sending process. We'll automatically select MMS for you if the content of your message does not qualify for SMS. In short, here are the differences:

SMS (Short Message Service)

  1. Content: Text only.
  2. Character Limit: Messages must be 300 characters or fewer. Anything longer will fail to send. Use the character counter and send a Proof to confirm your message qualifies as an SMS.
  3. Cost: Less expensive than MMS; refer to your usage plan
  4. Data Usage: Does not require a data connection; works over the cellular network.
  5. Usage: Ideal for short, simple messages like alerts, notifications, and basic communication.
  6. Compatibility: Supported by virtually all mobile phones.

MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service)

  1. Content: Supports multimedia content, including images, audio, video, and text.
  2. Character Limit: Up to 1600 characters; file size limits
  3. Cost: More expensive than SMS; refer to your usage plan
  4. Data Usage: Requires a data connection (either mobile data or Wi-Fi) to send and receive.
  5. Usage: Ideal for sharing richer content like photos, voice recordings, and videos.
  6. Compatibility: Supported by most modern smartphones, but some older phones may not support MMS.
