How do I suppress or restrict a group of people from receiving my broadcast email?
What is a suppression or suppression list? A suppression removes a contact from your email broadcast's Audience list. Consider this your Do Not Email list. A contact might end up on your suppression list one of the following ways:
- An email hard bounces, meaning the email address is no longer valid
- An email results in a spam complaint from the contact
- A recipient clicks the unsubscribe and opt-out link in your email broadcast
- Email author creates a separate Do Not Email list and suppresses that list in their Audience builder.
Bringing Over Previous Suppression Lists
When building an audience, your "starting with" list may still include individuals who have previously opted out of your emails. If you are coming from another email service, most services will build up a list of addresses to avoid emailing in a suppression or blacklist. Note these are not opt-outs or unsubscribes. This list contains all of your collected typo addresses along with those who have unsubscribed over time and also those who have spam-complained. Your Numero account will begin to populate a suppression list with the above instances, but it will be empty to begin with. To mark these addresses from your old service, it is important that you bring your suppression list into Numero to avoid sending mail to those addresses. Here is how to set your suppression list and remove them from an email:
To Suppress certain contacts:
- Create a Do Not Email list (learn more) - Honor past opt-outs by either marking your contacts with a Do Not Email contact code and include that contact code in its own Do Not Email list or save a list that includes every contact from a specific suppression list import
- From the Audience blocks, you will see the green box “Starting with”. You can drag and drop the beginning of your audience here. In the example below, the email recipients will “Start with all ~809 individuals on this list called Potential - Call List $500+"
- Take your Do Not Email List and drag it into the red Suppressing box to exclude anyone who appears in this List.
- Now your Audience starts with all individuals on the Potential - Call List $500+ and defaults to remove all records of individuals who also are found on this Do Not Email list, removing up to ~152 individuals from the ema
