How do I insert a merge tag into my broadcast email message?
Merge tags are unique text-based code that allows you to insert distinctive information about each contact into your message. Merge tags can be used in the Subject Line, Preview Text, and anywhere in the Message editor.
Adding Merge Tag to Subject Line and Preview Text
When creating a subject line or adding preview text in the Details tab, you'll see a button called "Add Merge Tag."
Upon clicking on "Add Merge Tag", a side window will pop up that displays all of our available merge tags. From here, you can select the copy button next to the tag so you can easily place the tag anywhere in the subject line or preview text. Note that you can type these yourself, but we created this page to make it easier and ensure that there aren't any syntax errors.
Adding Merge Tags to Email in Message Editor
When adding merge tags to the email in the editor, you can either choose the merge tags from the toolbar dropdown button or you can search for them by typing them out.
Creating Merge Tags from the toolbar
To create a merge tag from the toolbar button, first select the Merge Tag button in the toolbar, then select either Contact or Account. Choosing Account will give you merge tag options for fields that are on the backend Account Level of your platform, such as: Account Name, Account Location, Account Website URL, Contribution Maximum, and Organization Contribution Maximum. Contact merge tags will give you the frontend options, like the properties found on your contact record. This includes tags such as: (Contact's) First Name, Last Name, Ask Amount, and much more! See gif below for reference.
Creating Merge Tags by typing
You can also create merge tags by manually typing in the code. The nice thing about creating the tags this way in the editor, is that we will create a dropdown of all of our tags and it will respond to your text in real-time. To do this, start by typing : {{ That's two squiggly brackets facing right. Once you do this, we will create a dropdown of all of the available tags for you to choose from so you don't have to type the entire tag if you don't want. Or, you can start typing the tag you want to use to make it even faster. If you want to create a default value in case a contact doesn't have a value for your merge tag's property, click here for instructions. See gif below.
Where Else Can I Put Merge Tags?
One last place you might want to place merge tags is inside buttons and button groups. Luckily, we allow this as well! If you want to place a merge tag inside of a button, just type or paste the code in the appropriate field and we will pull in the correct value for the tag. See gif and screenshot below.
